In this video, I’ll show you my menu setup for the Nikon Z6ii and Z7ii mirrorless cameras. Includes by step instructions with lots of tips and tricks along the way.
Also, yes, I did change the intro. Believe it or not, I had a constant stream of complaints about the old one – apparently it was “too load and fast” for some of the viewers. Based on the their impassioned complaints, I was fearful that eventually someone would press the play button and the shock of the intro would cause them to jump right out of their chair. 😀 😀 .
Let me know if you think I should stick with the new into or if you liked the old one better. Enjoy the video 🙂

As mentioned in this video, I have a number of related videos that dive deeper into some of these setups. I have them embedded below:
I really did not understand how two finish p some back button controls towards thee end of z7!! camera. Need help.
Excellent ideas ans explanations as usual. Thanks
You didn’t mention the U1,2,3 settings and how you would use them. Seems like a nice way to switch from wildlife to landscape etc
It’s because I don’t use them. I shot wildlife like 99% of the time, so I don’t really jump around between settings that much. Even when I do, often the difference is just switching to a different exposure mode and adjusting F/stop, shutter speed, ISO, no biggie.
The intro shoots you into the 21th century. A leap forward for the viewing pleasure.
Hi Steve,
The new intro is a huge improvement. Well done!
I like the new intro.
I like the new intro……soothing…..gets you relaxed and ready to learn. Thanks
Great timing, Steve Perry. I got my Z 5 & Z 6 replacement, a Z 6II today, so I put in a ready battery and checked the firmware, and started your video. Keep up the great work.
I like the new intro!
I just recently purchased a A7II and have a D850. I am hoping Nikon updates the software to improve tracking also change the menu settings to allow the camera to be turned on by looking through the EVS and not depend on the shut off timer timing. My main type of photography is birds in flight so far I’m not overly impressed with the Z7II compared to the D850.
Great video, but I’ve found one error–you say that you can’t set AF area mode AF/[+] (which you’ve set to the movie record button) to a function button but you can! I have it set to FN-1.
You can set most programmable buttons to do AF modes like I have for the Movie record, what you can’t do is set in a specific AF area mode like in the D5/6, D500, D850. For example, if I was in single point AF and pressed the FN1 button, I can’t have it instantly switch to Wide(S) as long as I held the button and then when I released go back to single. I’d have to use the rear command dial to switch AF modes. That’s the missing function I was referring to in the video. 😀
Ah okay I misunderstood what you were saying, my bad 🙂 Indeed, it is annoying that you can’t assign a specific AF mode to a button, like I have done on the D850 and D500.
Definitely like the new intro. The old one made me think I was about to view a WWF video. Here’s a Suggestion for your “Drinks with Steve” Live Stream… Suggest to people that they prefix questions with a (or multiple) ? Marks. That way you don’t have to sift through all the “Hi Steve” and “Hi from (fill in the blank)” and get right to the questions. For example: ????I have focus problems (chatter) with my 80-400 lens on my D500. I’ve sent it in for repair twice and Nikon says there is nothing wrong with it. Any suggestions. I… Read more »
Thanks Allen! This is only my second stream (the first one was limited to just a small number from the forums) so that’s helpful 🙂 I’ll have to remember to suggest it to the commenters.
Super helpful collection of videos on this page, thanks! I’m anxiously waiting for the Z6II (body only) to become available. Can you put in a good word for me with Nikon? 😀
Keep the new introduction Steve!
