Nikon Z8 & Z9 Custom Controls Worksheet

Attention Z8 and Z9 Owners!

Do you find setting your custom controls a little…daunting?

Let’s face it – there are a ton of options and a lot of places to put them on the Z8 and Z9 and keeping track of everything is tough.

That’s why I’ve created this free worksheet for setting up your custom controls (shooting) menu in the Z8 and Z9!

I have included a table that allows you to fill in each customization you set for the Z8 and Z9, making it easy to keep track of what you have and haven’t programmed as you work (and it’s handy afterward to remember what you put where).

In addition, I’ve listed two pages of customizations that are handy for wildlife photographers, along with some brief notes. This little worksheet will make customizing your camera go soooo much smoother – I know it’s made my life easier.

Again, 100% free to anyone, and feel free to share it if you like:

Download Note: If your browser opens the PDF instead of downloading it, you can usually save it by going to the File menu and selecting Save or Save As.

PS – Make sure you check out my Z8/9 Setup Guide too!

Thanks much for the setup guides, works fine. Q: I have configured the video recording button on my Z8 to toggle around the focus settings as described, that is a good way of working for bird photos. But, how to get the original setting for the rec button back? I cannot find the rec function in the list?

Thanks Steve, although it’s pretty sad that Nikon still hasn’t provided a way to export our settings in something user friendly like XML, json, or some other common user readable format. That said, if they did then we’d just ask for a way to import it too which would mean they would have to error check each command for correct and valid syntax.

Thanks Steve, your info on the Z8 made getting to grips with it so much easier than if I’d had to do it from a standing start

If your Nikon Z8 is going back then please tell us why? I love the notes and sharing my experiences with card readers and PD power supplies. Its going to be invaluable before my next trip. It is already an adventure.

Excellent thank you Steve. I can transfer everything over to this new worksheet from the handwritten scrap of paper with all of my chicken scratches of settings, then crossing them out , adding new ones etc. based on your ” The ultimate..set up guide ”book.

That is wonderfully helpful Steve. Thank you so much for all the work you put in, not just on this but all your other content as well.
My Z8 is with Nikon again (!) but is coming back on Monday and I will undoubtedly go through my set up using this worksheet.
Best wishes,
David
