In this video, we’re diving deep into AF Handoffs with the Nikon Z8, Z9, and Z6iii—and this concept will likely apply to future Nikon mirrorless models too. There’s a ton of confusion out there between normal AF overrides and AF overrides that include a handoff and this video will clear the waters. If you shoot the Z8, Z9, or Z6iii, this video is absolutely critical to your AF success! (And it might explain some AF failures too!)
Whether you’re shooting fast-moving birds or other wildlife, understanding how to perform handoffs is key to capturing sharp, high-speed action shots. Plus, I’ll also share essential notes that’ll help get the most from handoffs and keep you from falling into common traps.

Thanks for clearing up overrides vs handoffs. As I recall, you normally use the record button to choose the different focus areas (single point, wide, auto, 3D, etc), but can do a quick handoff to Auto Area with your pre-programmed Fn1 button. In the video, you do a handoff to 3D. If I could ask, which button did you program for 3D, and how did you know to instantly go to 3D instead of Auto Area mode?
Great post Steve. I read it already several times, now I really understand it ! Also by saying when it doesn’t work helped me a lot in seeing the difference between a handoff and the normal override ! Thanks !
